1968 Ford Mustang

The 1968 Ford Mustang was touted as “the most exciting car on American roads.” Externally, it remains almost unchanged, with the exception of a recessed radiator grille with a simplified design and vertical chrome vents instead of side air intakes. The model has been brought into compliance with federal safety standards and is equipped with side marker lights, anti-glare rearview mirrors, an energy-absorbing two-spoke steering wheel and three-point seat belts. Engineers have improved the suspension design and optional front disc brakes. Due to the introduction of emission standards, the power of the base 6-cylinder engine was reduced to 115 hp, the 4.7-liter V8 289 – to 195 hp. At the same time, larger engines received additional horsepower: the 6.4-liter V8 390 produced 325 hp, and the power of the 7-liter V8 427 reached 390 hp. (This power unit was installed on the production Mustang only in 1968 and cost a whopping $755). Ford’s new weapon for Trans-Am racing was the 4.9-liter Windsor V8 302 engine with 230 hp, and for NHRA drag racing and street racing the 6997 cc V8 428 Cobra Jet (R-code) engine was introduced mid-year and power 335 hp.
